The DONGLE-AB is designed to be used with CSP™ (CANBERRA Smart Probes) meters such as Radiagem™, MIP-10 Digital, Avior® or Colibri®. It is a SMART converter that brings CSP capabilities to conventional probes and offers new life to the thousands of Alpha/Beta probes that have been rendered unusable due to the obsolescence of their associated survey meters.
The dongle minimizes the initial investment in a new generation of smart instruments by leveraging existing probes.
The DONGLE-AB has been successfully tested with THERMO/NE DP6 and DP2, THERMO/EBERLINE (S)HP380AB and LUDLUM Model 43-93 and has been shown to improve the probe's discrimination capability (by up to five times) as well as to achieve a better MDA. When used in conjunction with the Colibri ALARA communication platform, the dongle's high-performance signal processing minimizes crosstalk for better support of daily contamination checks in the field with a single measurement.
When paired to the DONGLE-AB, the probe becomes a smart package that is independent from the meter and available for any instrument from the CSP family. Prior to this, the meter and probe needed to be calibrated together and therefore the instrument remained on the shelf until an application required this specific configuration. This new approach delivers more uptime of existing instruments, thereby reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) because one needs fewer instruments to accomplish the same daily duties.
DONGLE-AB is part of CANBERRA's CSP family. It includes all key components of hardware circuitry (high voltage power supply, amplifier, discriminator, etc.). Also, the intelligence associated with controlling those components is located in the DONGLE-AB including control and storage of key parameters, settings, calibrations, probe ID, alarm settings (10 values for each unit to display with default setting), etc. Thus the probe and the DONGLE-AB make a fully integrated subsystem taking and transmitting the measurement to any CANBERRA CSP meter, which is used for display.
With high voltage and digitization of the data occurring in the DONGLE-AB rather than the instrument, measurement quality is no longer dependent on the quality of an external device. Moreover, the DONGLE-AB uses a serial protocol to communicate with the host which can be an instrument or a PC.
Calibration or daily source check can be performed directly with the dongle, without requiring an instrument, by connecting the dongle to a computer with CANBERRA Smart Probe Software (CSPS), allowing your CSP instruments to remain deployed in the field.
Once calibrated, DONGLE-AB and Alpha/Beta probe are ready to be used as a plug and play assembly to start a QA measurement in CPM, DPM, DMP/100 cm2 with CSP instrument in US settings; or c/s, Bq, Bq/cm2 with CSP instruments in SI settings. DONGLE-AB connects directly to a CSP instrument without jeopardizing the good balance of the new configuration when held in one hand. It can also connect to CSP-COM-BT Bluetooth® communication module to turn the new configuration into a wireless subsystem talking to Colibri.
DONGLE-AB is able to store up to 1000 data points from a data logging procedure handled via a host instrument. These data are: index, date/time, measurement value, selected unit and counting time.
DONGLE-AB can be upgraded (firmware) via CSPS, a USB cable and a PC.
Audio-R Audio Head-set for Radiagem™
The Audio-R improves the audible detection abilities of the Radiagem, allowing the user to listen to the measurement achieved by the Radiagem or a connected probe using headphones with additional audible reporting capabilities.
The Audio-R provides a differential measurement that makes searching for hot spots easier. Audio-R is auto-adaptative and automatically subtracts the ambient radioactivity background Rate from the audible report. Audio-R also provides a modulated sound according to the detected rate activity. These capabilities improve the user's experience by eliminating interference, thus simplifying a blind or otherwise difficult search.
Audio-R is especially useful in crowded or noisy areas such as plants or outdoor measurements, when Radiagem's sounds may be obscured by local activity. It can also be used to prevent others from hearing your measurement signals, well suited for areas where quiet operation is required (e.g., hospitals or for special Homeland Security requirements).
Audio-R connects between the probe and Radiagem's CSP input. It is compact and firmly attachs to the Radiagem. It is supplied with headphones which incorporate a volume control. Audio-R automatically deducts the background from the measurement. Once in a constant background, after a defined amount of time, the module will subtract the background from the measurement. Then only variations around the background will be recorded in the headphones.
The headphone sound reflects the radiation detected by the probe. For high sensitivity probes (e.g., SX-2R), Audio-R prevents headphone saturation. The pulse frequency increases proportionally to the Dose Rate measured. Over a defined level, when the pulsed signal increases, the pulse frequency progressively becomes a pure tone. This tone then increases relative to the activity, up to 3 kHz. When the alarm level is reached, this tone becomes a two-tone alarm.

CSP™ Telescoping Pole for Radiagem™
The CSP-Pole is designed to be used with the Radiagem™ personal survey meter and most of the new CSP™ probes. Its compact size and easy to deploy mechanism make it an ideal tool for measurement of areas that are difficult to access like the top and bottom of vehicles, ceilings, walls and even floors. CSP-Pole helps cover many Homeland Security applications for interdiction - access control (location of a source after a portal monitor alarm), and intervention - remote contamination check of an event.

Handle-R Coupling Handle for Radiagem and CSP Probes
Handle-R is a mounting platform and headphone audio interface for the Radiagem. It allows the user to hold the Radiagem and its associated probe in one hand and perform a measurement, leaving the user's other hand free. This handle replaces the 1.5 m cable between the Radiagem and its probe, or the Radiagem audio module option (which provides enhanced audio features) and the CSP cable, as this functionality is integrated in the handle.
Handle-R connects between the probe and Radiagem's CSP input. It attaches to the instrument and to its probe, creating a compact module. It is supplied with headphones which incorporate a volume control.
CSP contamination probes such as SA20, SB20 or SAB100 can be adapted on this handle, but it also connects to probes such as SG-1R and SG-2R.
Several configurations are available. Effectively this handle has two rotation axis, so that the display can be read easily while making the measurement.

Pancake Dongle for CSP Survey Meters PNK-R 900
The PNK-R can be used as an adapter which allows conventional pancake probes to be connected to CANBERRA Smart Probes (CSP™) instruments such as Radiagem™.
But PNK-R is more than an adapter, as it transforms a conventional pancake probe and its cable into a very smart probe. Effectively, PNK-R includes all key components of hardware circuitry (high voltage power supply, amplifier, discriminator, etc.), and the intelligence associated with controlling those components - control and storage of key parameters, settings, calibrations, generic probe ID, alarm settings (10 values for each unit to display with default setting), etc.
Once calibrated with its probe and cable, the PNK-R is ready to be used as a plug and play group to start a QA measurement in CPM, DPM, DMP/100 cm2 with 4000 survey meter series; or c/s, Bq, Bq/cm2 with 2000 survey meter series.
As long as PNK-R is associated with the same pancake probe and cable (PNK-R set), it can be "hot swapped" to all CSP meters without the need for any setup and immediately proceeds to measurement. The PNK-R set can also be calibrated without connection to survey meter. Calibration and QA measurements can be performed directly with the PNK-R, your probe and cable, without using an instrument, by connecting the PNK-R to a computer with CANBERRA Smart Probe Software (CSPS™).
PNK-R connects to the instrument's CSP connector and provides a MHV I/O to connect almost any pancake probe via its existing cable. Most probes integrating a 900 V operating pancake (HP360, HP210AL, 44.9) can be connected to CSP survey meters with PNK-R.
A PNK-R 500 is available on request for pancake based probe operating at 500 V.

CSP-COM: Communication Modules for CSP Probes
The CSP-COM module is ideal for remote monitoring applications, monitoring radiation in hot zones without human intervention or to centralize data acquisition. It can also simplify instrument installation by eliminating cables. The CSP-COM module can be plugged into any CSP probe. It enhances communication features of the CSP probe by increasing the communication distance between the probe and the terminal.
CSP-COM interfaces with the CSP probe on most common networks. It handles all communication tasks (transmission, reception, data, buffer ...) and even serves as the probe power supply, as it features an integrated rechargeable battery. It can also be mains operated through its power connector.
Most common networks are supported by the CSP-COM module including wireless connections (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RF and wired networks such as Ethernet and RS-485). When plugged into the CSP-COM module, the CSP probe can be placed in any location where a network connection is available.

This implementation is ideal for monitoring areas where no cabling is available (typically hot zones), outdoors, or for mobile applications. They are also very easy and fast to install in isolated areas.
CSP-COM Bluetooth is designed for short distance communication 20 m (65 ft). It is ideal for use in place of a cable, thus eliminating cable length constraints and connector issues making it easy to install in inaccessible areas. Bluetooth allows for the multiplexing of up to seven probes. Its battery life makes it ideal for daily use. It is a perfect match for a wireless-enabled survey meter such as the Colibri.
CSP-COM Wi-Fi, combined with an existing network and Wi-Fi base stations, can quickly build a measurement network. Wi-Fi is effectively able to multiplex a large number of probes with a reasonable communication distance (up to 100 m). Monitoring a Wi-Fi-enabled area becomes very easy as probes can be located at critical areas and transmit their measurement immediately to a remote terminal. The CSP-COM Wi-Fi module can also communicate directly with any Wi-Fi-enabled PC without any additional hardware or with a wireless-enabled survey meter such as the Colibri.
The CSP-COM RF module is perfect for creating a remote monitoring installation in a building. As a result of its frequency and power, RF communication is able to transmit and receive through concrete more efficiently than other wireless technologies. Also, combined with RF repeaters supplied by CANBERRA, the communication range of RF can be extended to virtually any distance. Therefore CSP-COM RF can be used for applications such as remote measurement in hot zones without human presence, thus improving safety and ALARA. It can also be used for remote monitoring inside buildings when a Wi-Fi base station network is not available. CANBERRA also provides an RF base station to enable RF reception on a PC or server. The CSP-COM RF module comes in two versions: the 868 MHz and 915 MHz.
The Wired module can be used in sites which are already cabled with Ethernet or classical twisted pair.
The CSP-COM Ethernet POE (Power on Ethernet) allows for the connection of any CSP Probe into an Ethernet network and assigning an address to each probe. Its POE feature allows power to be brought directly by the Ethernet cable as long as the network is POE compatible. The CSP-COM integrated battery is then used as a backup battery. CSP-COM Ethernet is compatible with any third party Ethernet equipment.
CSP-COM RS-485 module is ideal for re-using existing cabling, such as twisted pair, in old sites where Ethernet cable is not available.
Terminals for CSP-COM
PC/ Tablet PC with CSP-DLL based software:
Any PC operating Windows® with CSP-DLL-based software can interface with any CSP-COM module. Such software can monitor several probes simultaneously coming from different CSP-COM modules regardless of transmission standard.
The Colibri survey meter is able to interface directly with CSP-COM Bluetooth modules, thus handling several probes at a time and communicating wirelessly with CSP probes.Integrated battery
The CSP-COM module features an integrated Li-ion rechargeable battery which is easy to recharge with any compatible charger (provided with the CSP-COM). The Li-ion battery is lightweight and does not have any hysteresis effect. The CSP-COM modules can then be constantly powered and ready for use at any time.
Easy to Use
The CSP-COM module is easy to adapt: it is plugged directly into any CSP probe with an adaptation ring as shown in Figure 5. Its light weight and small volume allows the usage of the probe either in mobile or fixed applications.
The modules come with only one power on/off button. Four LEDs indicate the battery level (green, orange and red) and the data transfer of the probe.
The wired modules include a RJ45 connector for network link.
CSP-PL Programming Library
With CSP-PL Programming Library, CSP probes can be connected directly to a PC without the need for a survey meter. Measurements can be directly acquired, stored and displayed in any way that the computer allows. A PC can then act as a survey meter or a scaler/timer or as any instrument based on CSP probes with the appropriate software development.
CSP-PL provides direct call to function and allows acquisition of the CSP probe measurements on a PC without the need to understand the CSP protocol running all CSP instruments. By combining CSP-PL with CSP-COM, one can connect multiple local probes and/or remote probes to build specific systems and cover applications such as remote monitoring based on combination of different CSP probes covering either dose or contamination.
This programming library supports the third party software with periodical measurement updates after key parameters have been set before starting acquisition. These parameters are:
- Choice of unit (i.e: c/s, CPM, DPM, Bq, etc…) to display, selection made within the list stored in the probe memory.
- Enabling or disabling the integrated smoothing algorithm for dose-rate measurement, thus complying with IEC standards.
- Selection of Alert and Alarm set-points (from probe memory list or directly defined by the software). The software can either control alarm/alert decisions itself or leave this task to CSP-PL.
- Selection of periodical measurement update in CSP-PL (range from 250 ms up to days).
The host software does not need to pull each probe read-out because CSP-PL makes each measurement update available for it in computer memory stack, thus leaving only the main display management to the main software.
CSP-PL also automatically manages CSP-COM interface, that is:
- Scanning and discovery
- Periodical communication
- Communication lost and re-connection
To prevent compromising probe measurement accuracy, the CSP-PL does not allow the user to write probe operating parameters or to write calibration parameters.
